Camcast Uses Haivision’s Makito X Encoders with SRT to Fuel BILD’s Live Streaming Coverage of German Federal Election

BILD streams live from four party headquarters with high quality, low latency public internet connections

BERLIN, GERMANY – SEPTEMBER 27, 2017 – Haivision, a market leader in enterprise video and streaming solutions, and Camcast GmbH, a production and live streaming company, partnered to stream the live coverage of the German Federal Elections for Germany’s top newspaper BILD.

To cover the election results as they unfolded, Camcast live streamed from the Berlin campaign headquarters of four parties in the election, including the CDU, SPD, FDP, and Bündnis 90 Die Grünen for BILD, one of the most well-known German newspapers. The stream was broadcast to viewers on the BILD website, Facebook Live and YouTube Live. The broadcast featured interviews with the top party candidates, including Angela Merkel, Martin Schulz, Christian Lindner, Katrin Göring-Eckardt and Cem Özdemir. Hundreds of thousands of live viewers tuned into the stream to watch the first reactions of the parties and candidates as the election statistics were reported live.

For the live streaming workflow, BILD relied on Camcast’s expertise and Haivision’s video streaming technology to broadcast live from the four party headquarters to online audiences. Using Haivision’s Makito X video encoders and decoders and SRT technology, Camcast was able to send low latency, reliable streams using public internet connections from the party headquarters to the BILD production center in Berlin. Using Haivision’s KB encoder, the produced live stream was sent to a CDN for delivery to BILD.DE and the social media platforms.

“This is a great example of the flexibility and cost savings Haivision video streaming solutions bring broadcasters,” said Peter Maag, chief marketing officer at Haivision. “With the power of SRT and our encoding technology, Bild was able to bring together four remote locations using just public internet connections – no need for satellite links. Today’s audiences want more live coverage and this type of flexibility and power to stream from anywhere is critical.”

“BILD is an important streaming partner for us. It’s an honor to work on streaming the German elections and Haivision is a great partner for this live streaming production,” said Désirée Bauer, branch manager, Camcast. “We’ve worked with Haivision for many years and their Makito X and KB encoders work great in our live production and streaming environments because of the quality and reliability of the video streams.”
