Streaming Secure Live OR Video To Teaching Conferences.

Challenge

In order to demonstrate the latest technology in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) wanted to broadcast a live hysterectomy, highlighting the use of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, from Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso to the 2016 Global Hysterectomy Summit in San Diego.

AAGL faced the challenge of finding an encoding/decoding solution that would provide excellent video quality for their audience and be able to make use of any internet connection to broadcast their live video feed. Quality, reliability and security were important to the AAGL because their members are expecting a high quality live experience.

“We had tried using competing encoders but the packet loss made the viewing experience unacceptable. We were impressed with Haivison’s SRT, allowing us to transport video over the internet without sacrificing image quality while helping to ensure HIPAA compliance.”

Solution

SRT for public network

AAGL had tried using a regular encoder/decoder over the public internet, but packet loss and jitter made the video unwatchable. The IT team at AAGL reached out to Haivision to see if it was possible to use Makito X encoders and decoders with SRT video transport technology to connect the remote surgery in El Paso directly to San Diego.

End-to-end encryption

After testing the Makito X with SRT, AAGL was confident that they had found a solution for their live video streaming needs. In addition, with SRT’s end-to-end encryption, the AAGL was confident that they were respecting regulations and other data security considerations.

Results

Flawless experience using public networks

AAGL was able to deliver a flawless viewing experience to 200 physicians at the conference. AAGL also saved on expensive managed networks, by making use of public networks.

Haivision’s Makito X encoders and decoders made it possible to deliver reliable, high quality video of the remote surgery to their learning conference.

Live surgical demonstration

The solution benefits AAGL members by giving them a live demonstration of a cutting edge surgical procedure to further improve their knowledge and ability to treat patients.

AAGL was so impressed with SRT that they are already working on future remote conferences, some of which will take advantage of the talkback features present in the encoder/decoder to stream live interactive Q&A sessions.
