<h2 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Haivision
Simplifies Over-The-Top Cloud Transcoding and Streaming With HyperStream™ SaaS
and Managed Services</strong><strong><em> <br /></em></strong></h2>
<p align="center" style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>HyperStream™ Provides Live Video Streaming
Automation for Cloud Transcoding On Amazon EC2™ and Content Delivery Over the
Akamai HD Network</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>MONTREAL and CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> April 16, 2012 </strong>—
Haivision today announced HyperStream™, the company’s new Internet media
services portfolio. HyperStream simplifies and automates media distribution
through cloud transcoding and CDN connectivity for delivering the highest
quality, adaptive, live HD video over-the-top (OTT) to Internet viewers.
Available as both a user-controlled software as a service (SaaS), and as a
fully managed service, HyperStream brings together the power of cloud-based
transcoding on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud™ (Amazon EC2™), and easy
connectivity to Akamai’s SOLA Media Solutions for global delivery, security,
and analytics. <br />
<br />
HyperStream Live (<a href="http://www.hyperstreamlive.com/">www.hyperstreamlive.com</a>)
is a pay-per-use live cloud transcoding SaaS, which enables
simplified, adaptive delivery of source video content to desktop and mobile
devices over the Internet. HyperStream Concierge is a fully managed service for
Internet media delivery, including cloud transcoding, CDN distribution, video
player configuration, event setup and management, and on-site support as
needed. <br />
<br />
With HyperStream, users can readily establish live transcoding and stream
management instances automatically within any or all of Amazon’s eight EC2
regions around the world. Initiating multiple instances simultaneously can
deliver higher regional quality of service and greater resiliency. Available by
the hour, HyperStream allows users to reserve and initiate transcoding services
within minutes. HyperStream also provides seamless connectivity to the Akamai
HD Network, the world’s largest media distribution network designed
specifically to accelerate diverse video applications.<br />
<br />
“HyperStream provides an easy-to-use layer on top of cloud transcoding and
video CDN services for our users,” said Peter Maag, Haivision’s chief marketing
officer. “It not only simplifies and automates complex technical setups and
processes, but also streamlines the associated business relationships. As a
single point of contact for our clients, HyperStream combines live video
encoding, cloud transcoding, and distribution into a unified, managed
environment. We are adding HyperStream connectivity to our products to drive
over-the-top media adoption throughout our user base.”<br />
<br />
“The benefits of transcoding and encoding content in the cloud are clear,” said
Brad Rinklin, chief marketing officer at Akamai. “Moving these complex
transactions to the cloud, especially for live, global events online, translates
to lower costs and higher bandwidth availability. Combined with the delivery,
security, and analytic features in Akamai’s SOLA Media Solution portfolio,
HyperStream adds new<a name="_GoBack"></a> capabilities to the live video
streaming ecosystem for our valued customers.”<br />
<br />
Cloud-based transcoding has two important benefits for live video workflows.
Adaptive and dynamic streaming techniques require many streams of different
bitrates to be made available to users. Cloud transcoding allows operators to
minimize onsite encoding hardware and maximize available uplink bandwidth from
event locations by sending a single high-bandwidth stream to a live transcoder.
Then HyperStream uses the cloud’s ample bandwidth and computing capacity to
replicate that stream into the many required formats needed. <br />
<br />
Concurrently, Haivision will enable more than 10,000 devices with OTT
capabilities by offering “Connect to HyperStream Live” functionality to the
installed base and as part of future releases of Makito™ HD H.264 encoders,
Barracuda™ SD H.264 encoders, Furnace™ IP video systems, and Viper™ IP video
record-and-stream appliances.<br />
<br />
Haivision will be demonstrating the HyperStream portfolio at the 2012 NAB Show
in Las Vegas, April 16-19 and expects to launch the user-controlled HyperStream
Live SaaS environment in June 2012.<br />
<br />
HyperStream
has been deployed as a managed service for more than a year, and the Haivision
HyperStream team has supported numerous global events including Austin City
Limits, SXSW, The Masters Golf Tournament, and the European Commission’s EDD.</p>

Certification for 1080p HD Performance, <br />and is Unique in Offering Both Airborne
and Ground-Based JITC Certified HD Encoders</em></strong><strong></strong></p>

<p class="MediumList2-Accent41CxSpMiddle"><strong>MONTREAL&nbsp;and
CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> <a name="_GoBack"></a>April 10, 2012 </strong>—<strong> </strong>Haivision, an industry leading
provider of advanced video networking, digital signage, and IP video
distribution solutions, today announced that its Makito™ SDI and Makito Air™
high definition H.264 encoders have received Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) certification — a U.S.
government designation that guarantees
interoperability of fielded systems, and ensures products comply with U.S.
Department of Defense (DoD) standards for encoding Full Motion Video (FMV) for
Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance applications (ISR).</p>
<p class="MediumList2-Accent41CxSpLast">The certification
is granted only after JITC labs have performed exhaustive tests to validate
compliance with the DoD Motion Imagery Standards Profile (MISP). Many DoD
programs require both MISP compliance and JITC certification to ensure
end-to-end interoperability with other FMV processing, management, and
exploitation systems in use throughout the DoD and the intelligence community.
Without JITC certification, customers have no way of knowing whether their
encoded video will work with the entire FMV ecosystem currently deployed.</p>
<p>The
Makito is Haivision’s flagship HD encoder and has been used widely throughout
the DoD in support of global ISR applications in both airborne and ground
applications. The Makito is the first and only JITC-certified H.264 encoder
capable of 1080p60 resolutions, achieving Motion Imagery Standards Board’s
(MISB) recommended practice for HD video distribution and acquisition — MISM
Level 12 from RP 9720. As such, the Makito is uniquely and ideally suited for today’s
advanced sensor technology.</p>
<p>&nbsp;With
the commercial Makito and the ruggedized Makito Air reaching JITC and MISM
Level 12 compliance, Haivision is the first and only company to achieve JITC
certification for both airborne and ground-based encoding applications.</p>
<p>“Haivision
made a company commitment to the ISR community in 2008,” said
Mirko Wicha, CEO of Haivision. “We are constantly focused on increasing the
capabilities and applications of our low latency, metadata friendly, full
motion video systems.”</p>
<p>“We
take our responsibility to this user community very seriously,” said Andy Vaughan, vice president of U.S. federal sales
for Haivision. “Haivision’s
U.S.
federal team has worked diligently with ISR customers to ensure that our
solutions meet their needs for mission-critical applications. JITC
certification allows our customers to deploy field-proven, low-risk,
off-the-shelf technology both on the ground and in the air.”</p>
<p>The
JITC certification process validated several of Makito’s important features,
including very efficient compression of SD/HD video per SMPTE specifications
(CBR); KLV metadata insertion via serial, Ethernet (UDP), and SDI/VANC; and
frame-synchronous KLV metadata support per MISB Standard 0604. The testing also
confirmed that Makito supports very flexible encoding configurations for low
bit rate applications, and HiLo-Streaming™ for multiple bit rates from the same
video source.</p>
<p>The
Makito Air is a DO-160-rated version of the non-ruggedized Makito board.
Makito-SDI is available as a stand-alone appliance or can be installed in a
1-RU, 6-slot chassis, giving customers the best density and price performance
available on the market.</p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Haivision
Continues Record Growth in 2011<br />Leads IP Media Sector With New Technologies
and Acquisitions</strong><strong> <br /></strong></h2>
<p><strong>MONTREAL&nbsp;and
CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> Feb. 15, 2012 </strong>—<strong> </strong>Haivision
today announced results for its fiscal year 2011. The company has achieved
another year of significant revenue growth with a 47 percent increase over fiscal
year 2010, contributing to a 50-percent CAGR over the past six years. Haivision
technology is focused on intelligent media pipelines that incorporate video,
graphics, and metadata to help customers to build, manage, and distribute its
media content to users throughout an organization or across the Internet.</p>
<p>Haivision
has also increased its profitability steadily, ending 2011 with its 16th
consecutive quarter of positive EBITDA results. “The company has fueled its
rapid growth over the past six years through organically generated profits
rather than depending on outside capital,” said Mirko Wicha, president and CEO
of Haivision.</p>
<p>Supported
by the company’s strong fiscal performance, Haivision has been able to
successfully acquire and integrate four software companies in just over two
years — Video Furnace, CoolSign™, KulaByte™, and MontiVision Imaging
Technologies — each with strong complementary technology and unique market
positions. The acquisitions have significantly contributed to Haivision’s
end-to-end proposition within the IP media delivery market, supporting the
company’s leading position in high-performance H.264 video encoding with
enterprise IP video management, digital signage, and Internet media encoding
and transcoding.</p>
<p>Haivision
released three new product technologies in 2011 that are expected to contribute
significantly to the company’s continued growth. The Viper™ multichannel HD
video recording and streaming appliance is positioned toward opportunities in
both the medical and education markets. The Kraken real-time transcoding
appliance is extending the well-established position of Haivision’s Piranha™ and
Makito Air™ encoding products within the military intelligence, reconnaissance,
and surveillance (ISR) markets. Finally, Haivision launched HyperStream™, an
Internet media Cloud transcoding service based on KulaByte software
transcoding. HyperStream enables over-the-top (OTT) media delivery within the
broadcast, sports,&nbsp; entertainment, and
faith markets.</p>
<p>“Haivision
is now unique in providing end-to-end solutions bridging enterprise and
Internet media applications,” said Peter Maag, chief marketing officer of
Haivision. “We deliver best-in-class technologies and associated workflows for
media delivery both inside and outside of the firewall.”</p>
<p>“Haivision
is successful due to a unique combination of market understanding, channel
dedication, technology leadership, and fiscal diligence,” added Wicha. “As our
recent acquisitions mature within our channels and we extend our strengths
within the enterprise towards OTT and mobile solutions, Haivision is very well
positioned to continue its growth across our focus segments.”</p>
<p>Haivision
now has over 160 employees across four continents. Haivision sells its products
through more than 300 market-focused OEMs, integrators, and resellers globally.
Supporting the channel partners and customers, Haivision has corporate and
development offices in Montreal, Chicago, Beaverton, Austin, Hamburg, Dubai,

Lectures From 90 Classrooms on Brand-New University Campus&nbsp;&nbsp; </em></strong></p>

<p><strong>MONTREAL&nbsp;and
CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> April 5, 2012 </strong>—
Haivision Network Video, a leading provider of the most advanced video
networking, digital signage, and IP video distribution solutions, today
announced that Zayed University, a leader in knowledge and education in the
United Arab Emirates, is now equipped
with the Furnace™ IP video system, 91 Makito™ HD encoders, and 10
Stingray™ set-top boxes (STBs), which together power the university’s new lecture-capture system. The
end-to-end IP video system makes lectures from 90 classrooms available across
the whole of Zayed University’s brand-new Abu Dhabi campus.</p>
<p>The
new lecture-capture system encodes course lectures with Haivision’s HD Makito
encoders at the lowest possible latency, 55 milliseconds. The Makito is a
full-featured, high-performance encoder that combines the efficiencies of H.264
video compression and the image quality of full 1080p60 HD video. These encoded
video streams are handled by the Furnace IP video system, a complete
infrastructure that streams live lectures throughout the campus, &nbsp;while also recording, storing, and cataloging
the lectures onto the university’s network for future access.</p>
<p>The
Haivision IP video distribution system allows students, faculty, and staff to
access the content and view the lectures either with Haivision’s “zero
footprint” InStream™ soft player on their desktops and laptops, or via
Haivision’s Stingray STBs on televisions. Moreover, the system requires very
little effort from the university’s IT staff, providing ease of use for all
users from anywhere on the new state-of-the-art campus.</p>
<p>Once
a recorded session is archived, all of its catalog references are published in
HTML onto the university’s network in a simple, intuitive Web catalog, which
staff and students can access at either high or low quality — depending on the
user’s network connection — thanks to the Makito’s HiLo-Streaming™ feature.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p>“We’re
excited to be a part of Zayed University’s modern, new campus project — helping
bring lectures to students on such a massive scale,” said Mohammed Ghafari,
vice president of Haivision for the Middle East. “This grand project is a prime
example of what Haivision can supply to the education market in the Middle
Eastern region.”</p>
<p>In
addition to providing flexible, secure, and easy-to-use video delivery of
classroom lectures, &nbsp;Haivision’s
equipment was easily integrated with a variety of other services that were
deployed on the new campus. These include Zayed University’s new translation
system, digital signage system, large format LED screens, and video
conferencing/distance learning systems.</p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Haivision’s
New KulaByte™ 4.0 Live Transcoder <br />Delivers
30 Percent Performance Gains With
Linux-Based Cloud Transcoding </strong></h2>
<p align="center" style="text-align: center;" class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><strong><em>Next Generation of KulaByte Encoding Software Combines
the Highest Quality Live Video Transcoding <br />With Cloud Computing and Linux Simplicity
for Better Performance at Lower Cost <br /></em></strong></p>
<p><strong>MONTREAL&nbsp;and
CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> April 4, 2012 </strong>—
Haivision is set to launch its KulaByte™ 4.0 software for efficient
high-quality cloud transcoding at the 2012 NAB Show. KulaByte is a
software-based live H.264 video transcoder that delivers the highest quality
RTMP Dynamic Streaming for Flash® video and Adaptive HTTP Live
Streaming (HLS) for iOS devices. Now available for both Linux and Windows®,
KulaByte 4.0 delivers significant gains in transcoding performance and cost savings.</p>
<p>With
KulaByte 4.0, Haivision has migrated the award winning transcoding engine to
Linux to simplify deployment of the software within cloud computing
environments, improving long-term performance and reliability, and taking
advantage of lower-cost cloud instances. KulaByte 4.0 Linux-support combines a
30 percent performance gain and a 30 to 40 percent cost reduction when deployed
in cloud environments, such as Amazon’s EC2™. Additionally, the transcoder
introduces a simplified user interface and support for closed captioning, ad
insertion, and ingestion of H.264 in MPEG-2 Transport Stream encapsulation.</p>
<p>“KulaByte
is cornerstone technology in the over-the-top (OTT) video streaming segment,”
said Peter Maag, chief marketing officer for Haivision. “Migrating KulaByte to
Linux was only natural. Linux is the foundation for almost all of Haivision’s
systems and appliances. Now, KulaByte will benefit from true carrier-grade
performance, both within the server systems and in the cloud.”</p>
<p>KulaByte
cloud transcoding technology has been in use extensively by Haivision clients
and within Haivision’s HyperStream™ cloud transcoding service, enabling major
global streaming events such as South by Southwest (SXSW), Austin City Limits,
the NASCAR Sprint Series, and the Masters Golf Tournament.</p>
<p>The
KulaByte 4.0 transcoder will be available as a server appliance or as
software-only for installation within cloud computing environments in Spring
2012.</p>

<p align="center" style="text-align: center;" class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle"><strong><em>KulaByte™ Live Internet Encoder and HyperStream™ Cloud
Transcoding Drive High-Quality Multiscreen Delivery of NPR Music Showcase <br /></em></strong></p>
<p><strong>MONTREAL&nbsp;and
CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> March 15, 2012 </strong>—
Haivision today announced that its KulaByte™ Traveler live Internet encoder,
supported by the company’s HyperStream™ cloud transcoding service, is powering
multiscreen worldwide video delivery of performances from South by Southwest
(SXSW). The Haivision solution enables live streaming of National Public
Radio’s “South by Southwest: Live From Austin” music showcase, including three
days of music at Stubbs and the Parish, as well as the SXSW&nbsp;Bruce Springsteen’s&nbsp;Keynote
at http://www.npr.org/event/music/147357853/sxsw-2012. During SXSW, Haivision’s
KulaByte technology also will power live concerts from the Fader Fort available
at <a href="http://www.fuse.tv/">www.fuse.tv</a> and music from Music Fog
available at <a href="http://www.musicfog.com/live-broadcast">www.musicfog.com/live-broadcast</a>.</p>
<p>“SXSW
has become a premier showcase for up-and-coming artists, creators, content
producers, and entertainers,” said Peter Maag, Haivision’s chief marketing
officer. “The uniquely powerful combination of our portable KulaByte Traveler
encoder with our HyperStream cloud transcoding service provides NPR and other
organizations with a cost-effective way to get live HD video from SXSW shows to
audiences across the globe.”</p>
<p>The ruggedized KulaByte
Traveler encoder is based on the highly efficient H.264 compression standard delivering
the highest quality Adaptive HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and
Dynamic RTMP Flash®. This enables multiscreen
delivery to the largest global penetration of playback devices such as the iPhone®
and iPad®, as well as set-top boxes such as the RokuTM streaming
player.</p>
<p>For the NPR music showcase, Haivision’s KulaByte and
HyperStream technology is transcoding each HD feed from the ground into two
stream types at eight different stream bit rates. In creating the different bit
rate streams, the HyperStream cloud-based transcoder allows video production
teams to utilize event venues’ limited Internet connectivity and stream at
multiple bit rates to all viewer devices while maximizing video quality. This
approach preserves the visual value of content while eliminating the cost and
hassle associated with bringing a satellite uplink truck on site or special
Internet provisioning.</p>
<p>More information about the KulaByte encoder, HyperStream
service, and the complete Haivision product family is available at <a href="../">www.haivision.com</a>. &nbsp;</p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Haivision Introduces&nbsp;Kraken™&nbsp;ISR
for Low-Latency H.264 Transcoding of Full-Motion Video With </strong><strong>KLV
</strong><strong>Metadata</strong></h2>
<strong>&nbsp;</strong>
<p align="center" style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Kraken™&nbsp;ISR Supports the Advanced Transcoding
Requirements of UAV-Derived Full-Motion Video for Real-Time Command and Control
of Unmanned Military Vehicles</em></strong><strong> <br /></strong></p>
<p><strong><br />MONTREAL&nbsp;and
CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> <a name="_GoBack"></a>March 7, 2012 </strong>—<strong> </strong>Haivision Network Video, a leading
provider of the most advanced video networking, digital signage, and IP video
distribution solutions, today announced the Kraken™ ISR transcoder, designed
for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems that capture
full-motion video (FMV). Its ultra-low latency and real-time transcoding
capability make Kraken ISR ideal for demanding video-delivery applications
within the education, enterprise, and military markets, especially those that
enable control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).</p>
<p>Based on Haivision’s Kraken
low-latency video encoder, the Kraken
ISR easily processes Key-Length-Value (KLV) metadata
bundled with H.264 and
MPEG-2 FMV for downstream systems, resulting in extremely low
latency and frame-accurate synchronization. A flexible pipeline design provides
FMV with KLV metadata for viewing by real-time monitoring systems, with the
added ability for additional systems to re-inject new metadata into the FMV
stream. Military operations are one example of a situation where perfectly
synced FMV and KLV metadata is a vitally important feature. Low-latency,
data-synchronized, reliable equipment is crucial for the safety and success of
ground troops during hostile situations.</p>
<p>“Haivision clients in the ISR space —
especially those in the military — are implementing end-to-end HD H.264 video, which uses
metadata-rich applications that require extreme-low-latency transcoding,” said
Peter Maag, chief marketing officer at Haivision. “The Kraken ISR’s video
stream is so accurate that military personnel can rely on it to control unmanned aerial vehicles in
real time. The Kraken ISR is optimized specifically for the exact task
of disseminating information with the lowest possible delay in a format that is
required by downstream systems, networks, and viewers, while at the same time
preserving any required metadata with frame-accurate synchronization.”</p>
<p>The
Kraken ISR’s KLV metadata is MISB 0601.1- and 0604-compliant, accurately allowing critical KLV/CoT
data that is essential when forwarding military mission information. The Kraken
ISR enables users to monitor the fully uncompressed signal, stripping and
injecting metadata as required by advanced ISR exploitation systems. It
also boasts transport stream shaping capability, whereby an administrator can
set a&nbsp;bandwidth&nbsp;ceiling for any transport stream that leaves the
transcoder. A software-only option allows the technology to be deployed in
ruggedized mission systems in anything from a ground vehicle to an airborne
platform.</p>
<p>The Kraken ISR has been rigorously
tested through trials with current Haivision clients.</p>

Intel® Audience Impression Metrics Suite <br />Enabling Intelligent
Digital Signage Installations That Deliver Relevant, Fresh, and Highly Targeted
Messaging</em></strong></p>

<p><strong>MONTREAL&nbsp;and
CHICAGO </strong>—<strong> Feb. 21, 2012 </strong>—
Haivision Network Video today announced an integration of its CoolSign™ digital
signage solution with the Intel® Audience Impression Metrics Suite
(Intel® AIM Suite) to deliver a groundbreaking new audience
detection solution. With the Intel AIM Suite integration, CoolSign now offers
sensor technology for anonymous viewer analytics to enable intelligent digital
signage installations that deliver highly relevant, real-time content to the
right users at the right time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“Digital
signage has become one of the fastest growing advertising and marketing
channels, but its effectiveness depends on fresh, relevant, and highly targeted
messaging. Just as important are the measurable results that help ensure that
the right message is delivered to the right audience,” said Peter Maag,
Haivision’s chief marketing officer. “Haivision’s CoolSign and Intel AIM Suite
are a powerful combination for today’s most advanced digital signage
deployments, enabling any retail organization to engage customers intelligently,
track results, and continuously improve its ability to attract attention,
inform, and sell.”</p>
<p>Employing anonymous viewer
analytics, the Haivision CoolSign system with the Intel AIM Suite can identify the
gender and age bracket of a viewer and automatically play content
targeted to that person. In this manner, sales and marketing organizations
can develop precisely targeted content and schedule it to play to specific
audiences when detected by sensor-equipped displays. By storing viewing data in
its playlogs, CoolSign makes it easy for organizations to analyze viewing results correlated with
content. Banks, for instance, can access campaign analytics that transfer ad
display data from each branch and correlate it with viewership data — and they
can compute ROI by relating ad viewership data to branch sales.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Launched in 1998, Haivision’s CoolSign has a long legacy of
innovation, pioneering many aspects of digital signage technology including
n-tier architecture, native multicasting support, real-time connectivity, full
edge device monitoring and control, flexible media scheduling, closed data
architecture, bandwidth usage controls, and many others.</p>
<p>CoolSign installations use<a name="_GoBack"></a> Intel
processors to produce valuable intelligence for centralized content
development, distribution, and scheduling, which enables faster placement of
messages and easier content management. Additionally, CoolSign’s management
user interface (UI) is frequently cited as being one of the most powerful in
the industry — providing rich functionality in a simple, elegant, easy-to-use
manner. Secure, scalable, reliable, and efficient, CoolSign meets the demanding
requirements of retail, government, financial services, corporate, and
pure-play digital out-of-home advertising (DOOH) networks around the globe.</p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;"><strong>KIT digital Uses Haivision’s
KulaByte™ Internet Encoder to Power Live Multiplatform Video Streaming for
Nautilus Live</strong></h2>
<p align="center" style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>KulaByte
Encoder Converts Live HD Feed From Exploration Vessel Nautilus to Multiformat
Video Streams, Delivering Real-Time Educational Content to Broad Range of
Viewers <br /></em></strong></p>
<p><strong>MONTREAL&nbsp;and CHICAGO </strong>— <strong>Feb. 14, 2012 </strong>— Haivision Network Video
today announced that its KulaByte <span class="apple-style-span">live Internet encoder powers multiscreen video delivery for
Nautilus Live, a cutting-edge live ocean exploration program. A part of a
complete media system provided by KIT digital, the KulaByte H.264 encoder receives
the raw HD video signal from the Nautilus vessel and converts it into multiple H.264
IP streams in the formats required for delivery to the Nautilus Live Roku channel,
website, iPhones</span>®<span class="apple-style-span">, iPads</span>®<span class="apple-style-span">, and other mobile devices. </span></p>
<p>“Reaching the target audience across a
wide array of platforms was critical to the educational mission of Nautilus
Live, and KulaByte was an essential component in that effort,” said Jesse
Francis, solutions specialist, KIT digital, Inc. “This implementation was
completed prior to the release of the KIT Video Platform, and so KIT digital
worked with KulaByte to convert a single video stream to multiple high-quality
formats with minimal latency. We were also impressed with its Internet
streaming capabilities, which were able to detect outbound network congestion
and automatically adjust the stream bit rates to deliver the best-quality
output.”</p>
<p><span class="apple-style-span">Currently
docked in Yalikavak, Turkey, the research vessel Nautilus just completed a
four-month field expedition in the Black and Mediterranean Seas and the
Atlantic Ocean. Nautilus Live is a project of Dr. Robert D. Ballard, the
renowned oceanographer and explorer, and his international team of scientists
and engineers, who conducted a range of activities such as mapping the sea
floor, studying underwater volcanoes, and investigating aquatic life forms.
Throughout the expedition, students, educators, researchers, and general
audiences ashore were able to participate through the 24/7 live video feeds
that were delivered from the ship via KulaByte and the KIT digital solution.
The video feeds are an important component of The JASON Project, a partnership
between National Geographic Society and Sea Research Foundation that delivered
programs to classrooms and after-school settings such as Boys &amp; Girls Clubs
of America.</span></p>
<p>During the expedition, the Nautilus transmitted
via satellite video feeds originating from the ship as well as its companion
remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that were exploring the seafloor. The feeds
were received at the Inner Space Center at the University of Rhode Island,
where the KulaByte encoder converted them to the formats required for
multiplatform delivery — including Dynamic Flash for the Nautilus Live website,
and Adaptive HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) for mobile devices and tablet computers.
In addition, KulaByte provided an HLS stream for Roku set-top streaming devices
that were installed at Nautilus Live Exploration Command Centers (ECCs) at
museums, aquariums, and schools around the country. The Nautilus Live Theater
at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Conn., has hosted more than 30,000 visitors since
its opening as a featured ECC venue in 2010. The KIT digital solution employed
Akamai’s content delivery network to distribute the streams to all end-user
devices.</p>
<p>“The Nautilus Live and JASON Project
programs are truly groundbreaking in their efforts to give viewers the
experience of being aboard the Nautilus ship, sharing discoveries in real time
as they watched live ocean exploration and shipboard activities. And, thanks to
KulaByte, they could participate using the platform or device of their choice,”
said Peter Forman, vice president, Internet media division at Haivision Network
Video. “Nautilus Live is precisely the type of use case for which KulaByte was
designed: a far-reaching program that relied on live HD video streamed over the
Internet to provide a valuable learning experience for many types of viewers.”</p>
